Description

During World War II, an oil pipeline was built across the Isthmus of Panama; Although it was never used, the forest track that accompanied it, known as Pipeline Road, has been maintained, and gives access to the heart of the Soberanía National Park. The road begins next to the town of Gamboa, about 45 minutes west of Panama, and goes through the center of the national park. In some sections of the track you can still see part of the old pipes of the oil pipeline.
You will enjoy a walk surrounded by nature and you will be able to observe a diversity of wildlife.

Notes

What to bring (although it may sound obvious, on short excursions it is easy to forget some essential things):
  1. Water to drink. The guide will have a fridge with drinks in his vehicle, but you must bring water with you.
  2. Something to eat.
  3. Binoculars: If you don't have one, tell us in advance and we may be able to lend you some.
  4. Hiking shoes or boots during the dry season (between December and April), and waterproof boots during the rainy season (from April to November).
  5. Long pants that can be tucked into boots to avoid scratches and insect bites.
  6. Clothing in neutral colors and preferably dark: birds are more comfortable if we do not wear bright colors. Long sleeves are preferable to avoid insect bites and scratches from branches and thorns. It is advisable to always carry a raincoat or a small umbrella, and protection for the rain in your photographic equipment; a shower is possible even in the dry season.
  7. Sun protection and anti-mosquito lotion.
  8. Field guide: the guide will carry one, but you may prefer to use yours. We recommend The Birds of Panama: a field guide, by GR Angehr and R. Dean (Zona Tropical / Cornell)
  9. Sandals or light shoes, and an extra shirt to change at the end of the tour (you will appreciate it).
