Itinerary

Day 1
Taste of Guatemala - Food Walking Tour
  • You will be picked up at our meeting point in Antigua Guatemala to meet our specialized gastronomy guide and will begin with an introduction to the History of Guatemalan Gastronomy. During our walk we will admire the architecture of the colonial City of Antigua, here is a brief summary of what to expect on your way. We are going to explore the Antigua Guatemala market (we will learn about the history of grains, vegetables and fruits).
  • The main foods that existed in Mesoamerica before the Conquest were corn, beans, squash, cocoa and chili peppers and to remind a bit of our past we will have the opportunity to be in contact with local people and learn how to make tortillas that are made from corn. . Parque Central is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by the traditional grid pattern often used in Spanish urban planning in the colonies.
  • The park is surrounded by the Palacio del Capitán de los Generales, the Town Hall, the Church of San José (formerly the Cathedral of Guatemala), the Archbishop's Palace and the Portal del Comercio. Here, visitors will also find the Fountain of the Mermaid. The Count of Gomera (Gomera is the word that means rubber plantation) built the fountain in memory of a popular legend, which tells the story of a King whose daughters gave birth but did not want to breastfeed their children.
  • You will learn about this famous story while immersing yourself in the colonial history of the city. Visit to an emblematic restaurant in Antigua Guatemala, well known for its variety of local dishes, we will know how the kitchens were in ancient times and we will taste delicious Guatemalan desserts made with local ingredients, we will also appreciate the amazing landscape that the terrace offers. From this view we will appreciate the Arch of Santa Catalina, the Church of La Merced and other important buildings of Antigua Guatemala.
  • On our walk we will appreciate the Arch of Santa Catalina and its history. Continuing with our experience we will taste local dishes and learn about their history. We will have the opportunity to know the most important dishes of Guatemalan Gastronomy. These culinary art creations were born during the 16th century and represent the fusion of pre-Colombian cuisine with ingredients of Hispanic Arab origin. Most of the dishes are made with vegetables, meats and spices.
  • We will also have the opportunity to taste an iconic dish of Antigua Guatemala, known for its peculiar flavor and the ingredients that make it up. Visit to the convent of the Capuchinas where we can see vestiges of ancient cuisine and where many of the native recipes of Guatemala originated. Then continuing our experience we will visit a typical Guatemalan confectionery where we will learn about the production process and history. We will also appreciate artisan sweets made with local ingredients and fruits.
