Itinerary

Day 1
Copan Archaeological Site
  • We leave Guatemala City first thing in the morning and transfer you to Copán, Honduras. Our transfer will last approximately 6 hours. Here is a brief summary of what you will see on your tour.
  • Time to have breakfast en route (included).
  • Upon arrival in Copán, we will meet our local guide, an expert in the area who will fill us with all his knowledge of one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Mayan world: Copán, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • We will start with a gentle walk to the park. Copán is an archaeological site of the Mayan civilization located in the Copán department of western Honduras, not far from the border with Guatemala. It was the capital of an important kingdom from the Classic period from the 5th to the 9th centuries. The city was located in the extreme southeast of the Mesoamerican cultural region, on the border with the Isthmus-Colombian cultural region, and was almost surrounded by non-Mayan peoples.
  • The Plaza de la Escalera Hieroglyphic has a monumental staircase, one of the exceptional structures of the Mayan culture. On the 10-meter-wide steps, there are more than 1,250 individual glyphs, constituting the longest known Mayan inscription.
  • The main complex and the cemetery complex are located in the center of the site and are connected to the Sepultura complex to the northeast by means of a road. The site is known for a series of portrait stelae, most of which were placed along processions. The paths in the central square of the city and in the Acropolis, a large complex with pyramids, plazas and palaces, also have a long field for the Mesoamerican ball game. The playing field is between two parallel buildings that frame a rectangle of exact dimensions.
  • You will have free time for lunch in Copán (not included).
  • At the end of the tour, return to Guatemala City.
